Nigeria has launched a new federal university to address climate change and environmental pollution in the Niger Delta. The initiative aims to build local expertise and create practical solutions for long standing ecological problems in the region.
The university focuses on sustainability, research, and innovation to support affected communities.
Federal University of Environment and Technology Holds First Matriculation
The Federal University of Environment and Technology is located in the Koroma and Saakpenwa communities of Tai Local Government Area in Rivers State. The institution held its first matriculation ceremony on February 4, 2026.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, spoke through his representative, Mr. Sunday Ajide. He said the university would lead research efforts to solve environmental challenges in the Niger Delta.
The federal government established the university on February 3, 2025. Academic activities began after the completion of essential administrative and academic preparations.
Academic Programs Focus on Environmental Solutions
The university currently operates six faculties. These include Agriculture, Applied Health Sciences, Engineering Technology, Environmental Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, and Management Technology.
The institution has admitted more than 1,000 students. Vice Chancellor Professor Prince Mmom said the university plans to produce skilled environmental professionals within five years.
He explained that the academic programs will focus on ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, and community development. The university aims to deliver solutions that improve lives across host communities.
University Enforces Strict Discipline and Ethical Standards
The university leadership has introduced strict rules to maintain discipline. Authorities will not tolerate cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, or staff extortion.
Pro Chancellor Professor Don Baridam warned that lecturers must publish in recognized indexed journals. He said the university would sanction any staff member involved in unethical practices.
Students must also maintain high academic and moral standards. The institution will apply rustication to those who violate major rules.
Government Pledges Support and Partnerships
The federal government has promised continued support through funding, policy guidance, and infrastructure development.
Officials called on industries, researchers, and development partners to collaborate with the university. These partnerships will strengthen research in renewable energy, environmental remediation, and sustainable development.
The Federal University of Environment and Technology represents a major step in Nigeria’s effort to protect the Niger Delta and promote environmental sustainability.
