Bonsai Robotics, a San Jose based agricultural technology startup, has raised $15 million in new funding. The company plans to use the investment to expand its artificial intelligence tools that address labor shortages in farming. In particular, the funding will accelerate the rollout of its Visionsteer system for orchard operations.
As farm labor challenges continue to grow, automation is becoming a key focus for specialty crop producers.
Funding Round Signals Investor Confidence
The Series A funding round was led by Bison Ventures. In addition, Cibus Capital, Acre Venture Partners, and existing investors also participated. This raise follows a $13.5 million funding round completed in 2023.
At that time, the company focused on hiring and marketing expansion. Now, leadership views the new investment as validation of its technology and long-term growth potential. As a result, Bonsai Robotics is positioned to scale more rapidly.
Visionsteer Technology Targets Orchard Automation
Visionsteer is designed to retrofit standard farm machinery with cameras and onboard computing systems. Using computer vision, the technology enables vehicles to navigate orchard rows autonomously. Therefore, farmers can adopt automation without replacing existing equipment.
So far, Bonsai Robotics has tested the system on more than 40 vehicles. These trials took place across orchards in the United States and Australia. Meanwhile, real-world testing has helped refine system accuracy and reliability.
Plans for Software and Industry Partnerships
With the new funding, the company plans to enhance its software capabilities. Additionally, it will expand its AI training datasets to improve performance in diverse orchard conditions. Bonsai Robotics also aims to strengthen partnerships with farmers and equipment manufacturers.
By doing so, the company hopes to ensure smoother adoption and long-term use of its technology.
CEO Highlights Market Expansion Goals
Tyler Niday, co-founder and chief executive officer of Bonsai Robotics, said the funding reflects the team’s progress so far. He added that the company is focused on accelerating market entry.
According to Niday, faster deployment will help growers manage ongoing labor shortages during harvest seasons. Ultimately, the company aims to make autonomous orchard operations more accessible and reliable.
As agricultural automation continues to evolve, Bonsai Robotics is positioning itself as a practical solution provider. Through Visionsteer, the company seeks to support productivity, efficiency, and resilience in modern farming.
