Microsoft has strengthened its climate strategy by signing a long-term agreement to purchase carbon removal credits from a Canadian bioenergy project. This move demonstrates the growing importance of innovative technologies in corporate sustainability efforts.
Deal Highlights
North Star Carbon Solutions, a partnership between Svante Technologies and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council, will supply Microsoft with 626,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal credits over 15 years. The credits will come from a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facility in Saskatchewan. In addition, the project connects with the MLTC Bioenergy Centre in Meadow Lake, capturing emissions for permanent underground storage.
About the Project
The facility converts biomass into energy while capturing CO2 before it enters the atmosphere, using BECCS technology. North Star Carbon Solutions will manage the transport and secure storage of the captured carbon at a dedicated geologic site. Commercial operations will begin in early 2029, with Svante Technologies funding development until construction starts. Furthermore, the project promotes Indigenous leadership in clean energy initiatives.
Wider Implications
Microsoft continues to expand its carbon removal portfolio through agreements with other global providers. As a result, scalable solutions accelerate progress toward net-zero targets, especially as demand for verified carbon credits grows. Meanwhile, Canada is emerging as a key hub for BECCS deployment, supporting industrial decarbonization worldwide.
